The SRC allows you to operate a short-range marine VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any marine craft. It is a legal requirement for marine VHF users throughout the world. It’s also handy to know what you should do if you ever require assistance at sea.

The RYA VHF course changed at the start of 2014 to comply with European legislation. This is a great modular online course and can be completed wherever it suits you and in your own time. It can be taken on PC, Mac and iPad.

This course is required for Advanced Powerboat / RYA Coastal Skipper and RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Offshore candidates. It’s also great for anyone interested in sailing, power boating, sea angling, diving or anything else on the water.

Eligibility to take the exam

Candidates of any nationality or residency are eligible to take the UK SRC exam provided they are 16 years old or older on the
day of the exam. There is no age limit on the attendance of an SRC training course.

Exam candidates should have one of the following three qualifying criteria prior to the exam taking place:

  1. Satisfactorily completing a recognised classroom based SRC course, delivered through a RYA recognised training centre.
  2. Satisfactorily completing the RYA’s online SRC course, delivered through an RYA recognised training centre.
  3. Holding an acceptable non-GMDSS maritime radio operators certificate such as the RYA’s Restricted VHF certificate.

Candidates should contact their local RYA recognised training centre for course and exam details. Candidates following option three are strongly recommended to attend some form of coaching/training at an RYA recognised centre prior to taking
the exam.

No experience is necessary prior to taking this course. There is no minimum age but you must be over 16 to receive a licence.

The course includes using the radio, correct frequencies, distress procedures, GMDSS, urgency and safety calling, search and rescue.

The Online RYA VHF Radio course comes with a Marine Radio Simulator inbuilt so you can practise using the Marine VHF Radio interactively. The course lasts approximately 6-8 hours and the assessment 30-60 minutes.

If you wish to take the course in a classroom please contact hello@seatrainingsussex.co.uk for more information and prices.

The RYA fee for the exam (online) is £65 payable direct to the RYA.

Sea Training Sussex will issue a personal login and access to the RYA Interactive Site. STS will also email a student course pack to accompany the online course comprising the RYA VHF Radio e hand book. This is included in the cost of the course.

Try the free online taster course before you choose to take the full course by clicking the link below. This will also cover all necessary system requirements; www.rya.org.uk/coursestraining/courses/specialist/Pages/OnlineSRCtaster.aspx.

On completing the online course you need to take the RYA SRC exam at an RYA Training centre. At Sea Training Sussex we conduct the exam in Polegate, East Sussex.

You can also take the exam with Sea Training Sussex if you have completed the modules with another training centre. Following successful completion of the course you will be legally allowed to operate VHF and DSC equipment.

No experience is necessary prior to taking this course. There is no minimum age but you must be over 16 to receive a licence.
