RYA VHF Marine Radio Course

The Short Range Certificate (‘SRC’) is the radio operator qualification which authorises the holder to operate a VHF radiotelephone, fitted with Digital Selective Calling (‘DSC’) on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment.

The SRC allows you to operate a short-range marine VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any marine craft. It is a legal requirement for marine VHF users throughout the world. It’s also handy to know what you should do if you ever require assistance at sea.

This course is required for anyone in charge of a vessel wanting to use a VHF radio for essential communication.

Candidates following option three are strongly recommended to attend some form of coaching/training at an RYA recognised centre prior to taking the exam.

Taking the exam

Here at Sea Training Sussex we understand that organising a VHF exam after your classroom or online course can be tricky. Therefore we always try to put on a classroom course with an exam on the same date to alleviate any stresses or difficulties in completing the qualification. We also offer Exam only dates for those who complete the course online or elsewhere. We charge a £10 room hire fee to cover the cost of venue hire.

Upon booking your classroom course we will send over the relevant joining instructions and notify Mark, our trainer and examiner who will be in touch prior to the course/exam date.

PLEASE NOTE– for the exam there is a payment of £76 payable directly to the RYA, which Sea Training Sussex receive no financial gain from.

No experience is necessary prior to taking this course. There is no minimum age but you must be over 16 to receive a licence.

The course includes using the radio, correct frequencies, distress procedures, GMDSS, urgency and safety calling, search and rescue.

Our Classroom RYA VHF Radio course lasts approximately 6-8 hours and the assessment 30-60 minutes as part of our VHF Classroom course a VHF training Radio will be provided.

Our RYA VHF classroom course is delivered at Sovereign Harbour Eastbourne. Our Classroom is modern, warm and a great learning environment. Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day. There is plenty of free parking in the waterfront car park located 2 mins from our classroom.

If you have a group of 4-6 people we can look to facilitate a bespoke course date for you.

Currently we offer both the online and classroom courses.

Classroom courses offered for group bookings of 5-6 People.

All of our courses can be paid for by credit/debit card or BACS (bank transfer). If paying by BACS, please be aware that we require payment within 24 hours of booking, otherwise the booking may be cancelled.
